SOCIAL DANCING
Looking for some great opportunities to show off the amazing dance moves you learned in Club this year? Here are a few choice events happening in and around the city - some are especially tailored for the summer season and others are happening all year round!
Guest Night at the Sandra Cameron Dance Center
A free way to shake those salsa hips of yours to a live band. The studio also has separate rooms for ballroom, swing and hustle/west coast and complimentary wine and cheese. Located in Soho.
You Should be Dancing at Club 412
Home of Frim Fram every Thursday night - great swing dancing all night long for only $5 with student ID. (You’ll be sure to run into many NYU and CU students who are members of the respective swing societies!)
Various events held and lessons offered throughout the month. Located at 412 8th Ave. on the corner of 31st St. right near Penn Station/Madison Square Garden.
Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center
June 8-26, 2008
Dance under the stars to live music in the plaza outside of Lincoln Center for free! Every night is something new and exciting and a great way to get a little taste of everything!
Mambo Tuesdays/Tango Fridays at Chelsea Piers
Free Salsa/Mambo nights every Tuesday, and Tango every Friday from 5-9pm with live band in Chelsea Market.
Jazz-Age Lawn Party and Festival on Governors Island
Saturday and Sunday, June 7th and 8th 11:30 am to 6:30 pm - And - Saturday and Sunday, September 13th and 14th 10 am to 7 pm - Time to pack your picnic basket and hop on the ferry! In addition to Michael Arenella’s 11-piece Dreamland Orchestra which plays both days, Gypsy-Jazz virtuoso Stephane Wrembel and band will join us on Sunday the 8th; his guitar-driven band serves up Le Jazz Hot like no other.
A wide array of music, activities, games and contests are open for all ages to enjoy:
* Charleston and Peabody Dance lessons with legends Roddy Caravella and Paul Grecki of Sandra Cameron Dance Center
* Vintage 78 records spun on a gorgeous 1920s Victor Credenza phonograph machine by Matthew Hinson (wait ’til you see the horn on this thing!)
* 1920s Motorcar Exhibition - lucky game winners will get a spin around the island in a genuine rumbleseat; hold on to your hat!
* Vintage clothing dealers and boutique milliners. They will all be peddling wares, so be sure to tuck some cash into your garter.
* Croquet games hosted by The New York Croquet Club
* Horseshoe Toss
* Tug-O-War
* Bathing Beauties and Gents Vintage Swimsuit Parade! (Sunday Only)
