About Club

The NYU Latin & Ballroom Dance Club is a student organization under the Department of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation. This club is devoted to teaching its members basic steps to a wide variety of social dances and styles. Popular dances include salsa, mambo, waltz, tango, swing, and hustle, among many others! The club is taught by former NYU Club President and Team Captain Meagan O’Toole as well as by the executive board and other guest instructors throughout the year, including Club alumni as well as former Club Coach and professional dancer, Amy Garcia Phillips.

The club meets during scheduled Saturdays, 4-6PM in the George Barrie Dance Studio located on the Lobby level of the Coles Sports Center, the NYU athletic facilities at 181 Mercer Street, between Bleecker and Houston Streets. In order to be part of club, you must be a student, faculty member, community member, or otherwise have a membership to the athletic facilities to get into the building. For those without a facilities membership, you must be signed in by someone you know who has access to the building for a $10 fee per entrance per person.

Dues for the Fall 2008 semester are $15 and are due with membership registration at the second meeting of the year, TBA. There will be no extensions offered as this is a requirement by the Department of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation. After this deadline, membership will be closed to the public and meetings will be available only to the registered and paid members. However, the public is invited to our special invents, including our socials and workshops.

We start each meeting with a 15-minute warm-up, and then spend the rest of the session learning and practicing dance steps to the two styles of dance for the week. No partners or special shoes are needed, although we recommend clothes that you can move in, and ask that you do not wear rubber soled shoes that might scuff the floor.

In November, we will host Top Hat and Tails, a semiformal dance and small, informal NYU-only competition that gives students the chance to show off their skills. In April, we will host our Second Annual Spring Showcase, a light and fun social featuring showcases from club members and other dancers to showcase their talent and creativity.
